Explore Leg 1

Leg 1: through the Caribbean

From the vibrant docks of Trinidad to the lush peaks of Dominica and the sheltered bays of Guadeloupe, this first leg is pure Caribbean tall-ship adventure. You’ll island-hop on the 30-meter brigantine NEPTUN, sailing under steady trade winds, bracing yards, setting jibs and standing night watches beneath warm tropical skies. Ashore, there’s time to explore spice markets, rainforests, and colorful harbors before returning to the deck for another day under sail. It’s the perfect introduction to life aboard a working brigantine — hands-on, immersive, and full of the Caribbean’s rich culture and beauty.

Exploring the Route – Leg 1

1. Trinidad: Where the Journey Begins

The first leg of NEPTUN’s 2027 Atlantic journey begins in Trinidad, a lively island at the southern edge of the Caribbean. Port of Spain buzzes with music, markets, and ship chandlers — the perfect place to provision, train, and step aboard a working 30-meter brigantine. Here the crew settles into life at sea: standing watch, bracing yards, and preparing for weeks of trade-wind sailing.

2. Grenada: Spice and Sail

From Trinidad, NEPTUN heads north to Grenada, known as the Spice Island. The sweet scent of nutmeg and cinnamon drifts through its colorful capital, St. Georges. At anchor, trainees dive into warm waters or explore lush hillsides and old forts ashore. It’s the first real taste of island-hopping life under square sail — reefing, setting, and trimming sails while navigating short but rewarding passages.

3. Martinique: French Caribbean Charm

Next stop is Martinique, where European flair meets tropical color. Creole markets, café culture, and volcanic peaks surround the harbors. Sailing here sharpens seamanship: coastal pilotage, anchoring under sail, and handling NEPTUN’s square rig in shifting island breezes. Ashore, the crew discovers rich history, local rum, and French-Caribbean cuisine.

4. Saint Lucia: Sailing Beneath the Pitons

Crossing to Saint Lucia brings dramatic scenery — the twin Pitons rising sheer from the sea. The anchorage at Soufrière is unforgettable, and the sailing is classic trade-wind work: steady reaching with quick reef drills in passing squalls. It’s a perfect place to practice tall-ship seamanship while enjoying rainforest hikes and natural hot springs ashore.

5. Dominica: Wild Heart of the Caribbean

Further north lies Dominica, the most untouched and adventurous island on this leg. Towering rainforest, waterfalls, and boiling lakes invite exploration between watches. Crew life blends with expedition spirit: sailing into rustic anchorages, managing lines and sails, then heading ashore for river trips or mountain trails.

6. Guadeloupe: A Sailor’s Landfall

Leg 1 concludes in Guadeloupe, a blend of French elegance and island life. Here, after nearly three months of watchstanding, sail evolutions, and night passages, the crew arrives with a new rhythm of the sea. It’s a place to rest, refuel, and reflect before turning north toward regattas, ocean passages, and the next great legs of the voyage.

Exploring Leg 2

Leg 2:
from Caribbean to New York and Canada via Bermuda.

From the warm trade winds of Guadeloupe, NEPTUN sails north to join the spirit and spectacle of the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, where some of the world’s most beautiful sailing vessels gather. Turning northwest, the brigantine sets out across open ocean for the mid-Atlantic landfall of Bermuda, a true sailor’s waypoint and a welcome sight after days at sea.

From there, the voyage crosses the Gulf Stream and heads up the U.S. East Coast, making dramatic arrivals in New York and Newport, Rhode Island — cities steeped in maritime history. The leg finishes in Lunenburg, Canada, home to classic schooners and a proud shipbuilding heritage.

Exploring the Route – Leg 2

1. Guadeloupe — Caribbean

Leg 2 begins in Guadeloupe, where NEPTUN and her crew make final preparations before leaving the warm trade winds behind. French-Caribbean charm, colorful markets, and sheltered anchorages provide a last taste of tropical island life before the ocean miles ahead.

2. Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta — Tall Ship Spirit

Sailing north, NEPTUN joins the legendary Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, where classic sailing ships and vintage yachts gather each spring. It’s a celebration of traditional seamanship — a chance to sail among some of the world’s most beautiful vessels and feel the camaraderie of the tall-ship fleet.

3. Bermuda — Mid-Atlantic Landfall

From Antigua the brigantine heads northwest, leaving the Caribbean behind for the first real bluewater stretch of this voyage. Days of open-ocean sailing end with landfall in Bermuda, a true sailor’s waypoint where the turquoise shallows and historic St. George’s harbor offer a warm welcome and a well-earned rest.

4. New York — Iconic Arrival

Next comes one of the most unforgetable landfalls of the entire journey: sailing a tall ship into New York Harbor. Passing under the Verrazzano Bridge and past the Statue of Liberty is an experience every mariner remembers — a dramatic contrast to the quiet trade-wind islands left behind.

5. Newport, Rhode Island — American Sailing Heritage

The passage continues to Newport, a city steeped in yachting history. Here the crew steps into a culture of regattas, classic yachts, and maritime tradition — a perfect setting for sailors who have just crossed open ocean under square sail.

6. Lunenburg, Canada — End of the Atlantic Coast Leg

Leg 2 concludes in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, a UNESCO World Heritage port famous for wooden boatbuilding and the fishing schooner Bluenose. After weeks of mixed ocean and coastal sailing — trade winds, Gulf Stream tactics, and busy U.S. waters — arriving in this historic harbor marks a proud milestone on NEPTUN’s way home across the Atlantic.

Exploring Leg 3

Leg 3: from Canada  across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe

From the historic harbor of Lunenburg, Canada, NEPTUN sets out on her transatlantic homeward passage — a true deep sea journey. Leaving North America behind, the brigantine rides the summer westerlies and trades toward the mid-ocean haven of the Azores, a volcanic archipelago long cherished by sailors as a first landfall after weeks at sea.

From there the voyage continues east, crossing the Bay of Biscay and entering the North Sea to make landfall in Holland. The final miles take the ship through the Kiel Canal, an extraordinary sea-to-sea passage that links the North Sea with the Baltic.

Exploring the Route – Leg 3

1. Lunenburg — North Atlantic Departure

The final leg begins in Lunenburg, Canada, a UNESCO World Heritage harbor famous for wooden boatbuilding and proud maritime tradition. Here the crew readies NEPTUN for her ocean crossing: provisioning, checking rig and gear, and preparing for weeks on the open ocean.

2. The Atlantic Crossing

Leaving North America behind, NEPTUN embarks on her great transatlantic passage. Days and nights at sea follow a steady rhythm of watchkeeping, sail handling, and celestial and electronic navigation. It’s classic deep-ocean seamanship — long swells, shifting weather systems, and the satisfaction of guiding a tall ship across one of the world’s great oceans.

3. The Azores — Mid-Ocean Landfall

Midway across, the ship reaches the volcanic Azores, long cherished by sailors as the first landfall after weeks at sea. Lush green islands rise from the Atlantic; there’s time to walk cobbled streets, explore crater lakes, and savor a well-earned rest before the final push to Europe.

4. Holland — Gateway to Europe

Continuing east, NEPTUN makes landfall on the Dutch coast. These low-lying harbors have welcomed ocean voyagers for centuries. It’s a chance to step ashore for fresh supplies and feel Europe beneath your feet after thousands of miles under sail.

5. Kiel Canal — The Entrance to the Baltic Sea

The leg finishes with a passage through the Kiel Canal, linking the North Sea to the Baltic. Motoring through its quiet inland waterways and locking into the Baltic is a sailor’s rite of passage — a peaceful contrast to the wide open ocean behind.
