Captain / Yachtmaster 1 class worldwide

About the Role:

Brigantine NEPTUN is seeking a Captain / Yachtmaster 1 Class Worldwide to join our non-profit sailing organization for the upcoming stages of our world voyage.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced sailor and leader, comfortable commanding a traditional 30-meter brigantine, guiding a mixed international crew of sail-training members, and taking full responsibility for navigation, safety, and vessel operations.

Responsibilities

  • Command Brigantine NEPTUN during ocean passages and port operations.
  • Lead and mentor a multinational crew of up to 16 sail-training members.
  • Plan and execute ocean passages, including route planning, weather routing, and port clearance procedures.
  • Supervise deck, rig, and engine room activities to ensure safe and efficient maintenance of all systems.
  • Ensure compliance with Danish Maritime Authority regulations for pleasure vessels and local port and immigration procedures.
  • Conduct drills and maintain a strong onboard safety culture.
  • Teach and inspire less-experienced crew in seamanship, navigation, and traditional sailing.
  • Represent the vessel and the organization professionally in ports of call and when liaising with agents, authorities, and local communities.

Qualifications

We do not require a formal commercial master’s license; however, we expect that you: 

  • Hold a Yachtmaster certificate 1 class worldwide or equivalent commercial license.
  • Proven experience as Captain or Officer-in-Charge on large sailing vessels (preferably >20 m).
  • Strong knowledge of traditional rigs (brigantine, gaff, or square rig).
  • Offshore navigation experience and familiarity with international clearance and safety procedures.
  • Leadership, communication, and crew management skills suited to a mixed-experience environment.
  • Technical competence in rigging, mechanical, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure.

Economy

This is a non-commercial position within a voluntary nonprofit organization.

  • Compensation: Modest monthly salary and support for flights.
  • Accommodation and meals are fully provided onboard.
    This role is suited for a captain who seeks the voyage, the adventure, and the opportunity to teach seamanship — rather than one motivated by financial reward.

We expect from you: 

  • Able to commit for a minimum of 6 months during 2026 or 2027.
  • Willing to become an active part of the crew and sailing community, fully participating in daily shipboard operations and routines.
  • Have experience handling and maneuvering traditional sailing vessels, preferably square-rigged or brigantine type.
  • Capable of leading and managing the full crew, maintaining discipline, teamwork, and a positive learning environment onboard.
  • Demonstrate good communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills suitable for an international and mixed-experience crew.
Marine Engineer / Engineer / Mechanic

About the Role:

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Marine Engineer or Mechanic to join our community and sailing team from february in Mexico to 1. august in Tahiti, French Polynesia. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, a passion for marine engineering, and a commitment to our community onboard. 

Responsibilities:

  • Running the engine room
  • Teaching the crew about our systems and thereby delegating the workload to the crew onboard.
  • Conduct inspections and troubleshoot technical issues
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards
  • Collaborate with our captain, mates and crew
  • Develop and implement cost-effective solutions
  • Maintain and develop our electrical system onboard
  • General maintenance on all mechanical and electrical systems onboard.

Qualifications:
We do not have any requirements for acctual certifications, but we expect that you:

  • Have experience with old mechanical engines
  • Have knowledge or experience with watermakers, firefighting- and bilge systems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Economy:
In non-profit Neptun we are all voulenteers, and this is a voulenteered opsition offered. No flight paid. Food and accomodation is covered by organization during your whole stay.

  • Have experienece with mechanics & old engines
  • Be in charge of all mechanical operations below deck
  • As a daymen in the watch schedule you will be working 08-17 while underway sailing or night/day watches when making way under engine.
  • In charge of electrical systems and their maintenance
  • In charge of bunkering operations, watermaker and tank capacities.
