Captain / Yachtmaster 1 class worldwide

About the Role

Brigantine NEPTUN is seeking a Captain to join our non-profit sailing organization for upcoming stages of our world voyage. The ideal candidate is an experienced sailor and leader, comfortable commanding a traditional 30-meter brigantine and guiding a mixed international crew.

Responsibilities

  • Command Brigantine NEPTUN during ocean passages and port operations
  • Lead and mentor a multinational crew of up to 16 sail-training members
  • Plan and execute ocean passages, route planning, weather routing, port clearance
  • Supervise deck, rig, and engine room activities
  • Ensure compliance with Danish Maritime Authority regulations and local port procedures
  • Conduct drills and maintain a strong onboard safety culture
  • Teach and inspire less-experienced crew in seamanship, navigation, and traditional sailing
  • Represent the vessel and organization professionally in ports of call

Qualifications

  • Yachtmaster certificate 1 class worldwide or equivalent commercial license
  • Proven experience as Captain or Officer-in-Charge on large sailing vessels (preferably >20 m)
  • Strong knowledge of traditional rigs (brigantine, gaff, or square rig)
  • Offshore navigation experience and familiarity with international clearance
  • Leadership, communication, and crew management skills
  • Technical competence in rigging, mechanical, and electrical systems

Economy

This is a non-commercial position within a nonprofit organization. Compensation: modest monthly salary, far below commercial rates, plus flight support. Accommodation and meals fully provided onboard.

Marine Engineer / Engineer / Mechanic

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Marine Engineer or Mechanic to join our community and sailing team. Strong technical background and passion for marine engineering required.

Responsibilities

  • Running the engine room
  • Teaching the crew about our systems and delegating the workload
  • Conduct inspections and troubleshoot technical issues
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards
  • Collaborate with our captain, mates and crew
  • Maintain and develop our electrical system onboard
  • General maintenance on all mechanical and electrical systems

Qualifications

  • Experience with old mechanical engines
  • Knowledge of watermakers, firefighting and bilge systems
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Economy

Modest monthly salary, far below commercial rates, plus flight support. Food and accommodation covered throughout your stay.

Chief Mate or Second Mate

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and experienced chief mate or second mate to join our community and sailing team from November 2026 to August 2027. Strong sailing background on square-riggers.

Responsibilities

  • In charge of navigation following IMO COLREGS
  • Maintenance and check-up on radio and satellite communication
  • Teaching the crew about our systems and delegating work
  • Monthly rig checks on foremast in cooperation with Chief Mate or Captain
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards
  • Arranging and posting schedules & skiff runs for own watch

Qualifications

  • Danish Yachtskipper 3 or local equivalent endorsed by the DMA

Economy

Modest monthly salary, far below commercial rates, plus flight support. Food and accommodation covered.

Cook

About the Role

In charge of the provisions, galley equipment, and daily cooking and dishwashing schedule onboard. Responsible for provisioning and, in cooperation with the crew, organizing stores.

Responsibilities

  • Cooking breakfast, lunch, and dinner 6 days/week while at sea
  • Provisioning for long voyages, food, propane, cleaning supplies
  • Storage and organization of food onboard
  • Overseeing gas capacity and emergency cooking plans
  • Posting dayman galley schedules for rotation in the galley
  • Maintaining food safety standards, tracking dietary restrictions and allergies

Qualifications

  • Have sailed before and confident working in the galley underway
  • Able to cook meals meeting the nutritional requirements of an active crew
  • Keep track of dietary restrictions and allergies and feed accordingly
  • Maintain food safety standards

Economy

Volunteer position. No flight paid. Food and accommodation covered during your stay.
